Alleghany Highlands 43” x 33”

“I think of my ceramic wall reliefs as paintings; not as a substitute of clay for canvas or glaze for paint, but as an investigation of the potential of ceramic materials to create compelling images on their own terms. Expanding on traditional ideas of tile work and mosaics, the work describes a new form which is both painterly and sculptural.”

These wall pieces are composed of handmade interlocking stoneware clay tiles specifically made to create each image.  They are positioned edge to edge so that grout lines will not interrupt the flow of the images or distract from the beauty of the ceramic materials.

Small and medium works are framed in black or polished nickel metal, weigh 5-12 lbs and hang on a picture hook.  The larger format pieces are framed in hardwood maple, weigh around 50 lbs and hang on an easy to install french cleat system.
